Mens 1s & Ladies 2s Pushing for Promotion

MENS

The Mens 1s are currently sitting 4th in their league with a definite chance for promotion....if they mange to pull of some big wins over the next 2 weekends.

Standing in their way are eternal foes, Bank of England (2nd place) and this weekend promises to be the make or break game for us. Bank comfortably won the 1st game 4-0 (against a makeshift 1s team) so this match should live up to it's dizzying heights.

The other obstacle standing in their way are the current league leaders, Old Kingstonian 1s who narrowly won 3-2 on the previous encounter between the 2 teams. So Merton needs to pull some magic out of the bag in the coming weeks and push for the promotion zone.

LADIES

With 4 games to go the Ladies 2s are also in with a fighting chance to claim a promotion spot. They are currently also 4th in their league, but a mere 8 points behind league leaders and even-stevens with 3rd. So a few wins at the tail end of the season will see them finish up quite nicely.

Mens 1s Win in Style

So Merton 1s did us proud and secured a vital away win against old foes Bank of England.

This means that the 1s are going for their 10th successive win this weekend when the face Old Kingstonians.

This still leaves our boys on 4th place...but still with a game in hand over 2nd & 3rd place.

Big Weekend for Merton Hockey Club

The club scoreline for the weekend will read

Played 5, Won 3, Drew 1, Lost 1. But how some of those games transpired is where the story lies.

Goals scored for = 26, goals against = 8. 18+ GD

MENS 2

The Mens 2s got the ball rolling at The Hub with an emphatic 12 -1 victory over Surrey Spartans 2s (Previous meeting was 2-0 Mertons way). By halftime the game was over as a contest as Merton lead 7-0. 35minutes left to clock up as many bonus goals as possible. Goal scorers we're Mike Burgon(3), Grant Walker(3), Derek Fouche(2), Dave Moore(1), Deepak Patel(1) and Alex(1). This big win not only moves the mens 2s out of the relegation zone, but also address the negative goal difference which might be a deciding factor come end of season

LADIES 1

Next up to the plate were the Ladies 1s who face stiffer opposition in London Wayfairers 3s. After a tough and quite physical first half, which ended 1 all (courtesy of a Briar Lock equalizer). So dead locked it was and the lack of a bench was evident. A few choice words at half time and it was game on. Kate Johson was first on the scoreboard with a fantastic "diving" backstick lob over the logging keeper......some would say she planned to do it that way...some would say otherwise.....

Goal number 3 game came in the form of another spectacular manouvere where our Kiwi import ran some interference with the keeper allowing Pippa to knock the ball in unapposed.

Wrapping up the scoring was a Mrs Jenni James, who cooly slotted in a loose ball to seal the game, 4-1. This leaves the ladies 1s in 4th place in the league.

LADIES 2

Unfortuantely Merton's winning ways had to end sometime (for the sake of James Bishops wallet) and our Ladies 2s went down to a strong Academicals (top of the league) side 3-0. Still that leave the Ladies 2s in 4th place as well....so still in a great position.

MENS 1

The Mens 1s team got the program back on track with an 8-1 victory over Trinity MidWhitgiftians. Reports of the game are still filtering through, but scorers were Dave Le Guern(3), Ross Goodwin(2) and Andrew Sartor, Trevor Bean and Bren Duckworth notching up some singles. With other league results going Mertons way (Namely Woking and BOE drawing) this leaves the 1s only 3 points shy of 2nd place with a game in hand.

THOARS

The THoars rounded off the weekend with a 2 all draw (awaiting more details as well)

Mens Summer League

After a shoddy start to the off season the Mens Summer League team is on an unprecedented roll.

Ok, some would look at the table and say we lost a 4 on the trot before salvaging some pride and drawing the 5th......but since then we haven't looked back with 4 impressive victories (especially the 6 -2 win of nemesis BOE)

And to make this feat more amazing is that majority of the game's we've been a man or 2 down...sometimes even keeperless.

When Old Cranleighians decide to update their website we'll see exactly where we are.....but it's 2nd/3rd for us with 2 games left.....watch this slot

New Training Venue

Kings College Sand-based pitch. Just off Grand Drive in Raynes Park/New Malden.

Our training sessions will be every Thursday evening from 8:30pm - 9:30pm so no time for messing about.

Please be at the pitch at 8pm so that we can get all warmed up and stretched ready to walk onto the pitch at 8:30 and start hitting balls.

Please note that there are no changing facilities currently onsite, so arrive ready.

Merton Hockey Club Open Day

To kick it all off Merton Hockey Club is having a Welcome Back/Wind Up/Open Day (Whatever you want to call it)

All you need to bring is yourself....any friends that want to give hockey a go, your kit and be prepared to have some fun.

We're having the on field antics at Bishopsford Community School from 2pm (Up the road from the Hub).

After we've all worked up a sweat...or not....we'll be trying ut Ganleys Pub in Morden for some drinks so please feel free to join us for a bevvie or two.

(Ganleys is almost opposite Morden Tube station and for those that are driving there is free parking in the Sainsburys opposite)

Great Start to the Season

WEEKEND ROUND -UP

Well done to all those involved in the first games of the new season this weekend.

3 Great wins!

The Ladies 1s started off in style by beating Surbiton Ladies 1s buy 3 goals to 1. Debutant Barbara Hibbert, Captain Paula Kretzel and Striker Jenni James all getting their names on the scoresheet.

Next up,at the other end of the club, were the Boars team who travelled (and did they travel) to Horley to take on Horley 2s. The end result was a comfortable win for the Boars and a clean-sheet. 5 - 0 was the final score with Mike Burgon (2), Tom Robson (2) and Ian Tonkin (1) all contributing. Special mention goes to Aumran for his passing prowess.

Rounding off the day and clicking into another gear entirely were the Ladies 2s who recorded a comprehensive 7 - 0 win over Woking Ladies 3.

Well done all and lets keep it up!
